Our history

KUBUS was founded in 1986 and is distinguished for having developed the first diluent for long conservation and high protection of swine semen, the MRA®, thus revolutionizing the practice of artificial insemination (AI) in swine, which until then was at an incipient level. Since its origins in the eighties, KUBUS has been characterized for being heir to the great work done by the famous researcher and scientist Dr. Santiago Martin Rillo, its founder, who in addition to developing the technology for semen preservation did a great job in the dissemination of assisted reproduction techniques and reproductive management in the practice of pig farms, thus making a great contribution to the standardization and globalization of the AI technique at international level.

Just 3 years after its foundation, in 1989, KUBUS began its internationalization process thanks to the technological and commercial collaboration agreements signed with professionals and companies in the sector, first in European countries such as France, Finland, Italy and in the early nineties with Latin American countries, mainly Brazil, Chile, Mexico, etc., to later begin to penetrate the Asia-Pacific market in countries such as Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, mainly; to culminate more recently with the creation of the subsidiary in China, the company Kubus Suzhou Biotechnology and in this way, currently being present with its products and technology in 55 countries.

Over the past 25 years, the company has launched numerous innovative products that facilitate the practice of insemination both at the Artificial Insemination Centers (CIA’s) and at the farm level to offer solutions to the needs of end customers.

More recently, KUBUS has completed its range of products and solutions by launching a line of the latest generation of automatic equipment to carry out all the processes of production of semen doses “without pen”, from the collection, through the evaluation, processing and packaging of the semen produced in the CIA’s; complementing the range of products with solutions for the transport and application of the semen doses at the farm level.

KUBUS is a global animal breeding company that offers solutions and products also for other animal species besides swine such as rabbits, cattle, foxes and a complete line for artificial insemination for dogs.

Finally, and in keeping with the company’s strong vocation for the transfer of assisted reproductive technologies and reproductive management, the training and qualification of technicians both domestically and internationally is a constant objective of the company’s policy. Being the motto and slogan of KUBUS:

CONSTANT INNOVATION, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF SOLUTIONS and TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY AND TRAINING

Technological innovation and generation of technical solutions for animal reproduction

All the technological innovations for animal reproduction generated by the KUBUS R&D department are transferred to the final customers and distributors through an efficient technical-commercial service that provides technical advice, training-updating service and quality control through the laboratory that KUBUS has for this purpose with the final objective of achieving high productivity of the final customers.

This technical profile is inherent to KUBUS and it is also characterized by providing these services through its distributors in order to increase their sales thanks to the good results obtained by the final customers.

Another objective of KUBUS is the opening of new markets and to ensure success KUBUS selects distributors that meet the technical profile required to provide local technical service.

Technical advice for CIA’s that includes reproductive management of boars, critical points in the production of seminal doses, quality controls and bio-security, among others. For farms, reproductive management techniques and artificial insemination in general, among others, conventional and post-cervical artificial insemination techniques, gestation diagnosis and control, management of nulliparous females, etc.

Refresher courses on artificial insemination techniques for the training and education of personnel of companies in the sector and courses on new techniques for the evaluation of semen for the technicians responsible for the laboratories of the CIAs.

Writing of technical divulgation materials on current topics related to animal reproduction and material for divulgation and commercial promotion purposes: articles, conferences, presentations, etc.

Constant research for the development of new products: the latest generation of diluents, insemination consumables, equipment and software for the integral management of CIA’s.

Attendance at the main specialized congresses and fairs of the sector and active participation as speakers with current and informative talks at congresses, symposiums and technical seminars.

R&D project history

Single delivery system

The project was based on accelerating puberty by hormone treatment of nulliparous females to artificially inseminate them and thus convert them into breeders at 150 days, eliminating non-pregnant females, for which sows that do not come into estrus after the 7th day after hormone treatment must be eliminated. Subsequently, the weight and fat reserves of the young breeders are replenished by post-weaning fattening (Duroc).
With this system, breeding sows have only one farrowing, which improves the efficiency of the farm in two ways: obtaining piglets and taking advantage of the growth period of the sow for gestation, which after farrowing is sold as a sow for fattening to the slaughterhouse.

Determination of reproductive alterations in the management of gilts in intensive and extensive

In this project, it is contemplated that the coming into estrus will be exclusively with the presence of the male and other methods in nulliparous sows, analyzing the embryonic viability by determining the embryonic state at 7 days post Artificial Insemination by means of the technique of obtaining embryos by laparotomy, and establishing serological controls of the animals by means of ELISA diagnostics (use of antibodies marked with an enzyme), together with the examination of viscera in the slaughterhouse with the objective of reducing embryonic mortality and thus improving fertility results, in order to adapt the one-farrowing system to extensive swine production. It also included the genetic selection of animals with earlier puberty and greater prolificacy in the first litter, in order to reduce the cost of the piglet and achieve superior meat quality for obtaining cured products.

Conservation and vitrification of porcine embryos

The objectives were:

  • Study of the feasibility of the vitrification technique in swine species, in relation to the stage of development (morula, early blastocyst and expanded blastocyst).
  • Study of embryo survival after long-term preservation by vitrification.
  • Creation of a swine embryo conservation unit.
  • Dissemination of the embryo transfer technique to facilitate the exchange of genetic material.

Design of a nutritional adapter to optimize the reproductive efficiency of boars in artificial insemination centers

Optimize seminal production and quality, libido and boar welfare, by improving the quality and quantity of feed nutrients, through nutritional adapters, as a great innovation is its presentation format, in the form of a cookie.

IDI-20181228: SMART PACK: NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN PACKAGING AND PRESERVATION OF PORCINE SEMEN

Among the new research projects of Kubus, it is worth mentioning the project IDI-20181228: SMART PACK: NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN PIG SEMEN PACKAGING AND CONSERVATION, whose main objective is the development of a smart packaging for the conservation of porcine seminal doses, with materials with lower environmental impact and functional improvements for porcine spermatozoa.
It should be noted that this R&D project has been financially supported by the CDTI (Center for the Development of Industrial Technology) with European funds.

Trading capacity

The company currently has a wide network of specialized distributors with which it is able to deliver its products to 55 countries in Europe, America and Asia-Pacific, with a subsidiary in China, KUBUS SUZHOU BIOTECHNOLOGY, which is in charge of this huge market.
In the KUBUS technical-sales department there are 7 technicians with multidisciplinary training and technical experience distributed by geographical areas to serve end customers and maintain business relationships with distributors.
